Many non-traditional students have asked for more evening and online sections of courses.
We sometimes see that a course has several sections, but are all offered on only M/W or only T/Th due to professor preference.
Sometimes sections of required courses within a concentration are offered at conflicting times with other required courses.
Class schedules need to be planned with enrollment patterns in mind: how many newly admitted students are coming in, how many are graduating, how many are enrolled in a course that is a prerequisite to another (and will subsequently be taking the more advanced course the following semester). Much of this data is available but we don't seem to be coordinating this will course management.
